Through the looking glass

From October 17, 2008. Sometimes you need to see where you have been to see where you are going.

Time and time again we involve ourselves in a search for something that we have no clear idea how to identify. We have heard rumors, we have seen images, and we have even had vivid dreams. But the plain truth is we know not of this thing that we change our lives for. We have no true knowledge of this thing we say to others we are willing to die for.

For as long as we have known this thing has been engrained into everything we look for in life. We are taught to put all things aside for this one thing. We are told to leave out friends, leave our family and many of us choose to even leave behind our children. This thing is told to us that it will solve many of our long aching pains and our most troubling problems. This thing has a stronghold over us. This thing will make you jump out of a plane, off the side of a building, or even worse into the arms of someone who you think has your best interest at hand.

We care for this thing day and night and night and day. We pray to God that every day he deliver this mystical, magic thing into our lives, our hearts and our minds. This thing will make you leave behind everything you have worked for. This thing will make you cut yourself and bleed. And for those of us who cannot easily control this thing it will even take their life.

This thing has all power in our lives. Not because it has great power but because we surrender to it and we give it great power. The funny thing is we want to surrender ourselves to this thing. We want to feel overtaken by this thing. We want to be made by this thing and we even want to become this amazing thing.

Here and now I have learned to appreciate this thing, to find joy in this thing and most importantly respect this thing. So what is this thing? You know it, we all know it. It is this thing called LOVE!

So now we know what this thing is. We know what it will do to us. We know that many of us cannot control it. We know that above all else we really, really want this thing. This thing Love can overtake us, it can overcome our soul, and it can poison our lives. But when we see this thing we smile. When we feel love we can even cry. When we smell Love we turn to it and follow.

I like the feeling of Love; you love the feeling of Love. But how do we know what Love truly is? How do we know if what we feel is Love? How do we know it isn’t the other silent killer? That other silent killer looks Love, it even feels like Love. The silent we always say never is in our heart, we always say it is Love we feel. And why? We say these things because Love is not the silent killer. Love will kill us softly, but the silent killer called Infatuation will kill your spirit, kill your flesh and poison your most treasured thing. Infatuation will kill Love. Infatuation feels good at first, but eventually the feeling of joy becomes the feeling of pain.

Love, Love on the other hand does not fade. Love does not kill us, love makes us smile. Love makes every experience fun. Love will make you do and say things you never knew were possible. This thing called Love will sustain you. It will fill you. It will consume you and even though you may not want it to; Love will overtake you. What must we do? As much as we may deny it we must “Surrender to Love.”

My way of identifying Love is simple. Does this Love make you smile? Does this Love make you laugh? Does this Love make you want to cry? If not it isn’t really Love. Love is a best friend. Love is the one you want to call when you have a bad day. Love is the one you can’t wait to call when you have a great day. Love is the one you can look up to and also give direction and advise to. I want Love; I want the Love that I dream about. I want to be in Love with my “Best Friend”
